The number of dedicated sports blogs is now large and a growing number offer both amateur and professional writers a platform on which to publish their work. Many of these are free to use, but there is a growing number that pay contributors in the same manner as conventional newspapers.

In the United States, the Indianapolis-based National Sports Journalism Center monitors trends and strategy within the industry and provides a syndication service for major news outlets such as the Associated Press. In Europe, a similar development was the growth in popularity of soccer “fanzines”, cheaply printed magazines written by fans and published without the involvement of official clubs or media organizations.
Some of the biggest names in British sports writing have been attracted to this new medium, including Peter Wilson of the Daily Mirror, Hugh McIlvanney, first at the Observer then later at The Times and Ian Wooldridge of the Mail on Sunday, who has won five consecutive Sports Writer of the Year awards. In addition, there have been a number of excellent long-term projects such as Tom Bower’s Broken Dreams which analysed the state of English football and Andrew Jennings’ and Vyv Simson’s controversial investigation into corruption in FIFA, the world soccer body.
